My Father

written by Chakriya PHOU

My father was good person. He helped the villager.
He gave 2/3 of our land, where we live, to build school for kids. He took the loan to construct the school. Money remained, he spent on building pagoda, water channel and bought seed and (baby) animal and gave them all to the villagers.
He helped them since he lived till died.
On the day he died, he helped all villagers winning lottery.
Yes, he was a very good person. He lives in heaven now. But mother and us (his kids), living on earth, are very poor and we work hard to earn money to pay his debt.

Caterpillar and Butterfly

written & illustrated by Chakriya PHOU

A caterpillar is crawling on the leaf. He sees flowers are playing hide and seek with beautiful butterflies. He wants to play too. He crawls toward the flowers.
'Let me play with you,' Caterpillar says.
'No,' Flowers say. 'You are disgusting. Go away from us. We play with butterfly only.'
The caterpillar leaves sadly. He goes back to his leaf and cries.
Then there is a born-butterfly hearing his crying. She flies to the caterpillar.
'Why do you cry?' Butterfly asks.
'I wanted to join hide and seek with flowers and butterflies but they said I am disgusting. They don't play with me,' Caterpillar tells.
'Don't be sad, my friend,' Butterfly says.
'You can say because you are butterfly. You are beautiful,' Caterpillar says.
'Before, I was a caterpillar as same as you. Later, I became cocoon. And today, I am the butterfly. So, you too. Don't be upset. Today, you are a disgusting thing. Tomorrow, you will be a beautiful butterfly and maybe you are more beautiful than me and other butterflies,' Butterfly exclaims.
'Thank you,' Caterpillar says with smile.
'Never mind,' Butterfly says.
Then she flies.

How I Become A Porn Star

written & image designed by Chakriya PHOU

Living as a porn star, how many people give value?

I was a young girl, pretty and charm. I had close friends, pretty girls.
There were boys around us like bees flying around flowers. In classroom, on the way home. They followed us. It was proud of being a girl.
I enjoyed my youth life. I did not know the dark cloud was coming to my life. I did not realize that my beauty and charming made my friend jealous.

NaNa

written & illustrated by Chakriya PHOU

Love is crazy thing. When love comes, you cannot escape even you know it is wrong to law of nature.

I was not pretty daughter. I was fat.
I lived with my mother.
I was not close to any man even my relatives. At school, most of my friends were girls. My mother did not like me to be around with man.
I lived on second floor of the building. The whole building used the same stair. At the ground floor, there were flats and mostly, there was a group of old men sitting and chatting next to the stair.

You Can Leave

written & illustrated by Chakriya PHOU

'You never say you love me.' I sent message to him.
'I am busy. Can we chat later?' He replied.
'Can you share your time?' I messaged.
'I am really busy.' He replied.
'If you do like this, I won't bear anymore.' I messaged.
'Please. I am busy. I am working.' He replied.
'You live for work.' I messaged.
'In here, work is life.' He replied. 'I am working.'
I saw him texting. I sent before him sending me.
'Well, then fall in love with work.'
'You make me bored.' He message. 'I am busy working.'
'It is 22:30 and in Tokyo it is 24:30. You still work?'
'Japanese is not like Cambodian. Cambodian is lazy.'
'I am Cambodian. If you want to blame me, say about me, don't say about Cambodian.'
'I did not mean that. I just said in general.'
'We have relationship 3 years. You are in your country. I am in mine. We can meet only by chatting.. but you don't have time for two of us and you don't spare your time for me and you...'
'I am working.'
'I and you have chatted less than 10 time during these years...'
'I am working.'
'We need to make conversation to keep our love alive...'
'I am working.'
'It is not silent love...'
'I am working.'
He stressed me. He grilled me. He made me bomb like a volcano.
'If so, let's not continue.'
'Yes, I am busy.. thanks.'
'No, I mean we break up.'
He was quiet for 5 seconds. Then he texted me.
'You can leave.'
OK. He said true word from bottom from his heart now. I felt like free arrow from a bow. I did not need to pressure myself every night to wait for his contact. It was what I wanted too.

I Don't Understand Old People

written by Chakriya PHOU

When I was young, I heard almost everyday, my parents and other old people in family said they liked kid succeeded in their own effort.
I remembered the word.
I wanted to be business woman but I did not have money so when I graduated, I worked and saved money. Then I started my own business. I rent a store selling cloth. I told my parents and the old relatives. I invited them to celebrate the store. They said nothing.
No one came to my celebration day, only my parents but they just visited and they told me to join the business celebration of my relative. I closed the store and went with them.
All relatives were there. They came to cheer.
I sat with my parents and grandmas and grandpas. I heard them talking :
'She is lucky. Her parents open this cloth store for her. It is 50 meter squares and has 2 floors. The product is imported from abroad. I am proud of this girl.'
Then the grandmas and the grandpas said to me:
'I heard you have a store, right?'
'Yes.' I replied.
'Your parents make it for you?'
'I worked and saved money to make it by myself.'
'What is it and how big is it?'
'It is cloth store. It is 2 meters square. And I rent it.'
'It is small. I thought it was your store but you rent. Where do you get your cloth from?'
'I designed it by myself.'
'Buddha, it is not brand.' The grandmas, grandpas laughed, 'You should better close your store and come to work in this store.'
My parents was upset, not with their words but with me.
We stayed there till the celebration ended. When we were on way back home, my parents said to me:
'I should not bring you. You make me lose face. You should close your store.'
I stated:
'My store is not big and is not brand, but I use my own money with my own effort. You don't praise me but you turn to be proud of her business that is used her parents' money. You old is strange.'
Hearing my speech, they were silent.

You Are Decision Maker

written by Chakriya PHOU

I met my old friends. We never met for years. We went to a café and chat.
Me : How are you?
Friend 1 : I'm very well.
Friend 2 : Not bad. And you?
Me : I'm fine.
Friend 1 : Are you married?
Me : No.
Friend 1 : Oh, you are 40 years now. Well, you live alone. You don't have children. You know when you become old, your life will be hard. If you had children, they would help and support you. Like me, I have 3 kids. They are good. They never make me cry or sad. Now, they graduated and got job with high salary. I live happily, they support me, I don't care about expense.
Friend 2 : I don't think so. (She turned to me) You stay single is the best. You don't have to worry about anything. You have full freedom. Me, I have 3 kids too. They cause me troubles everyday, since they were young till now. They earn money but they ask from me more. So, I think you choose to stay alone is right.
I listened to them. Their lives were differently so they gave me advice differently. Their advice was based on their experience.
Actually, it does not matter to get married or stay single, it depends on your own choice, what is the best.
After, we separated to our houses.
