Story Telling From Japanese Ex-Friend

written by Chakriya PHOU

I had a Japanese friend. We had dispute so we unfriended each other.
Even though, he was still good friend to me if looking back to while we were friend.
He encouraged me when I lost hope.
I remembered his telling stories that had helped me go through tough period. Among all stories, there was one that I favored so much.
It was short, and it was true story, not fairy tale.
'In 2011, when Tsunami hit Japan, there was a baby survived but her father died. The baby was sent to her mother and grand mother. Once they got the baby, mother said she would take care and raised her baby well though it was hard.'
He told me that there were many people had hard lives - more than me - but they never gave up.
And this story brings me energy to fight when I meet difficult time and I have used it to encourage myself.

During Corona

written by Chakriya PHOU

It was stressful to stay at home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It made me angry that I could not bear so I went to heaven to meet with god of heaven.
'My lord, why don't you help human? Why you let us suffering like this?' said I.
'It is karma,' said god of heaven. 'Human has to taste stressful living in house like when they caught animal, bird, fish and put them in cage. Human has to taste fear when they know they are going to die like when animal realized they were going to be killed soon by human. Human has to taste sorrow when they learn their family member or friend are going to leave them with no return like when family and friend of animal saw or knew their one would be killed by human.'
Hearing what the god of heaven said, I thought it was right. Human does cruelly to animal. But I did not agree one thing so I opposed, 'It is other human that does badly to the animal. I never kill animal. Why I have to receive punishment with them?'
The god of heaven asked, 'Do you eat meat?'
I replied, 'Yes, I do.'
Then the god of heaven smiled and claimed, 'Although, you don't put animal in cage or kill it, but if you don't eat meat, there will no people catch or kill animal. It means you are conniver. And criminal and conniver have to be punished equally.'
After listen to the god of heaven, I did not have word to against him. I paid respect and came back to earth and continued to stay in house.

Two Friends

written by Chakriya PHOU

There were two friends. One named Sok, one named Sao.
They were driving motors to their hometown. They stopped and had Khmer noodle along the way.
Sok was eating and noticed Sao did not eat and was thinking deeply.
He concerned so he asked Sao, 'Why don't you eat?'
Sao took a breath and said, 'I am thinking.'
'Thinking of what?'
'I want to know feeling of a person who got hit.'
Sao just finished then BANG. His face was down into bowl of Khmer noodle.
It was Sok hit his back of head. When Sao raised face up from the bowl, he asked Sao, 'Now you know?'
Sao nodded.
'So,' said Sok 'finish your noodle.'
Sao did not reply and hurriedly ate the noodle from his bowl.

Dog Is Honest, Pig Is Smartest

written & photographed by Chakriya PHOU

I am a teacher. I am assigned to go to school at one village in a province. My class is grade 4.
First day, I arrive at class, I give question to my pupils before I start lesson.
My question is, 'What animal do you like? Why?'
I give 10 minutes to my pupils and then I receive answers papers.
Among those, I am interested in answer of one pupil. He writes, 'I like dog and pig because dog is honest and pig is smartest.'
I don't give point to him yet. I write note under his writing that, 'Why do you say pig is smartest? Who tells you?'
Then I return papers to pupils and I begin class.
When it is break time, I go to teacher office then come back to class before bell ringing 5 minutes. I find a paper on my table. I sit down on chair and I take a look. It is paper of previous pupil. He writes reply under my question, 'My grand father told me. He said pig is the smartest animal because it finds out that all animals will die to be food of human so it chooses to live easy life when it is alive, eat and sleep.'

Girls After School

written by Chakriya PHOU

When I was at school, I had one close friend.
When we finished grade 12, I went to university and she got married and went to live with her husband at province.
At that time, only old people had cell phone; young like us did not have so we lost contact.
Then I moved to new house.
Years passed.

Congratulate For Him, Cry For Myself

written & illustrated by Chakriya PHOU

I, Soki, Amret and Mono were classmates. After we graduated, we kept in touch.
March, 01, 2020 four of us just met and had dinner together. We chatted. We joked. We had fun. It was happy time for us as men.
Three days later, I called Mono and got information from his family that he passed away.
It was a shock. I was told he was sick for several months and he just died on March, 03.
I hurriedly called Amret. He was sad to hear that. Then I called Soki. When he learnt Mono was gone, he laughed. Moment later, he cried. I thought he became crazy because he could not accept that his friend left fast like this. I let him finish and I asked him.
'Why you laugh?'
'I was happy for our friend,' Soki said. 'He goes to peaceful place.'
'Why you cry?'
'I cried because I was sad  that I have to live longer in this world. Long live, more suffer.'
I could not say anything besides of 'OH!'

I Dreamt
